“Dance”, 2006, single-channel video, 3 min

Five students from the Vilnius Balys Dvarionas Music School presented their subtle responses to an episode of a girl dancing at the seaside from the film “The Last Day of the Holidays” (directed by Arūnas Žebriūnas, 1964). Being of a similar age as the dancing character in the film, the students were invited to create soundtracks for this episode. In “Dance” video, the girl’s dancing remains the same: it is repeated five times, and the musical compositions embrace a wide emotional spectrum.

In the film industry under the Soviet regime, social, political and cultural message codes were in the directors’ hands, but they could not digress too far from the ideological requirements of the time. In this case, Kristina Inčiūraitė offered an alternative: young people starting out on their careers created five musical compositions for a Soviet-era film.
